In a follow-up conversation, the storyteller revealed that his mother, who was Catholic, felt Mary guide the boat they traveled on as refugees during their voyage across the Pacific Ocean, The image is of her cherished statue of the Virgin Mary. She associated Mary's blue cloak with the waves of the ocean.
